FRIDAY MORNING CLASSES, SEPTEMBER 20, 2019

FAM2—CATTAILS AND DRAGONFLIES
Teacher: Marla Garber, Frankston, TX

Friday, 8 a.m.-12 Noon; Cost: $60 + $5 MSGS registration fee

In this class, I will introduce you to Twinkling H2O’s Watercolors.  We will woodburn, then lightly carve parts of the design.  Then we will learn about the watercolors.  This is a fun design.  Instructor will supply: patterns, H2O’s Watercolors, brushes (but my brushes are in rough shape, so you might want to bring a small round brush).  Student must bring:  a tall body gourd that sits well (stand is not included in class), approximately 7” wide and 10”-12” tall, with top cut off, cleaned inside and outside.  Spray paint inside (optional).  Heat tool or hair dryer, woodburner with skew pen, carver with small ball burr, good quality dust mask, and apron.  Note:  Instructor can provide a few prepped gourds for Cattails class students at a cost of $5 each.  If you'd like to reserve one of these, email Marla Garber at GourdLady247@hotmail.com.

FAM3—FUZZY WUZZY BOWL
Teacher: Sarah Kemp, Greensburg, LA

Friday, 8 a.m.-12 noon
Cost: $35 + $5 MSGS registration fee

Complete a colorful gourd bowl woven with dyed reed, multicolor yarns, and beads.  Techniques include decoupage with paper napkins, simple weaving, twining, and a basic braided rim.  Students will have their choice of napkin, reed, yarn, and beads.  Instructor will supply:  gourd base, napkin, Mod Podge, beads, and all reed and yarn needed. Student must bring:  apron, spray bottle, hand towel, and hair dryer or craft heat gun.

FPM1—DOTTY ABOUT MANDALAS
Teacher: Elizabeth West, Cullman, AL

Student will learn to use dotting tools and acrylic paint to create a 16-point mandala. Instructor will supply: base-coated gourd, tutorial with picture, dotting tools, paint, and all other necessary supplies. Student may bring: apron or smock.

FPM2—GOURD MASK ON CANTEEN GOURD

We will make a gourd mask using a canteen gourd. Pattern will be drawn on using pencil and ruler. Then the lines will be burned. Ink dyes will be applied. Mask will be adorned with feathers and beads. Instructor will supply: canteen gourd, ink dyes, feathers, beads, dowels, and miscellaneous supplies. Student must bring: variable-temp woodburner, skew and round medium ball woodburning tips, exhaust smoke fan (optional), mask to protect your lungs, apron, and feathers if you prefer a color other than blue.

FPM3—GNOME OR WOODSMAN

We will build a gnome or woodsman, your choice, with ornamental gourds and Quikwood. We will build one and finish it. Instructor will supply: gourds, paints, Quikwood, foil, masking tape, and tutorial. Student must bring: paint brushes, dry brush brushes, embossing heat gun, sculpting tools, Aleene’s Tacky Glue, and apron.

SATURDAY ALL-DAY CLASS, SEPTEMBER 21, 2019

S1—GREEN SEA TURTLE
Teacher: Marla Garber, Frankston, TX

In this class, we will cut and sculpt a green sea turtle. We will paint and mount the turtle on mopani wood. Instructor will supply: gourds, paints, Quikwood, acrylic rod, mopani wood, and tutorial. Student must bring: gourd saw, paint brushes—angle, flat and liner, and apron.

Instructor will supply: base-coated gourd, approximately 5-6” diameter; all paints and tools; tutorial with picture; and all necessary supplies to complete the project. Student may bring: apron or smock, in case of accidents.

SAM2—FUN CACTI

We will be painting and assembling 3 or 4 small gourds into a 4-1/2” clay pot to look like some cacti in the desert. Instructor will supply: all materials needed. Student must bring: apron and favorite paint brushes.

SAM3—DRAGON IN FLIGHT
Teacher: Georgie Foster, Hattiesburg, MS

Cost: $45 + $5 MSGS registration fee
Skill Level: All levels; Ages: 18 and up, due to woodburning tool
Approx. Project Size: medium canteen gourd

On medium canteen gourd, we will burn the pattern, using small blade tip. We will be blending ink dyes and applying them to the gourd. We will also touch on value and intensity of colors used. Instructor will supply: ink dyes, pattern packet, brushes, palette, and canteen gourd. Student must bring: variable-temp woodburner, small blade woodburning tip, and apron.

Students will learn to build a face by using Quikwood on a small gourd. The face will be completed. If time allows, the face will be painted. Instructor will supply: photo, instructions, small gourds, Quikwood, paints, and miscellaneous tools. Student must bring: clay tools (if owned), miscellaneous paint brushes (1/2” flat or angle and liner), water container, apron, and paper towels.
