Class registration is now open!  Register online by clicking this link:  online signup form   Spaces are limited and will be filled on a “first-come” basis. You may register at the festival as a walk-in, if class space is available. Class fee consists of teacher fee payable to the teacher in class and registration fee payable to MSGS upon registration. The $5 registration fee per class is non-refundable, unless teacher cancels class.

 THURSDAY AFTERNOON CLASSES, SEPTEMBER 14, 2017

TPM1—GOURD JEWELRY

Teacher:  Carol Maddox, Bossier City, LA

Techniques and materials for this class include:  woodburning, carving, inlay, Quikwood, alcohol inks, acrylics, and metallics.  Student will complete three pieces of jewelry in class.

Instructor will supply:  cleaned gourd pieces and everything needed to complete projects.  Instructor will have one woodburner and one carver for class to share.  Student may wish to bring own burner and/or carver.

Student must bring:  mask, gloves, and apron or smock.  You may wish to bring a woodburner and/or carver, if you have them.

 

 

 

 

 

 


TPM3—INKED AND UNWOUND

Teacher:  Georgia L. Golmon, Bogue Chitto, MS

Students will apply their choice of available colors of alcohol inks to a prepared gourd bowl.  After sealing the inks, they will add a decorative seagrass rim and an embellishment of their choice.

Instructor will supply:  prepared gourd bowl, alcohol inks, spray-on sealer, seagrass, assorted embellishments, and all other supplies needed to complete the project.

Student must bring: an apron or smock and a willing attitude.

 FRIDAY MORNING CLASSES, SEPTEMBER 15, 2017

FAM1—MOLD MAKING

Teacher:  Carol Maddox, Bossier City, LA
Friday, 9 a.m.-12 noon

Students will make a mold using silicone putty and use that mold to make an emblem to place on a gourd ornament.  The ornament will be embellished with hot glue scrolls and painted.  Student will complete one ornament in class.

Instructor will supply:  cleaned gourd and all supplies needed to complete project.  Instructor will have a variety of items to mold.

Student must bring:  hot glue gun and glue sticks, apron or smock.  If you have small items you wish to mold, bring them.

FAM3—CARVED FILIGREE VINE

Teacher:  Renee King, Hattiesburg, MS

This class will be held outdoors in the covered arena.

Learn the characteristics of different carving burrs.  Dye your gourd, then select your pattern from those supplied and carve it on your gourd.  You will be able to create designs for future projects.  Time allows only one pattern to be completed in class.

Instructor will supply:  Tutorial with patterns and dyes.

Student must bring:  Kettle gourd, 8-9” tall and about 8-9” wide, opened at the top and cleaned.  Dremel or carving tool with carving burrs (inverted cone, structured tooth and a small steel round burr.  Do not bring a diamond burr; it won’t cut through the hard shell.), mask, and apron or smock.

FPM1—DREAM CATCHER

FPM2—COSMOS TREASURE CHEST

Learn the basics of gourd cleaning and preparation. Select designs for your own outer space treasure box from the moon, planet and solar system patterns supplied and paint them on gourd. Apply a clasp and hinge, if desired.

Instructor will supply: cleaned and prepared gourd and all materials needed to complete project.

Student must bring: apron or smock and big smile.

FPM3—COPPER FOREST

Teacher:  Theresa Berryhill, Raleigh, MS Friday, 1-5 p.m.

Create your own copper forest! Students will learn to use alcohol ink and glazing gel as a coloring agent, learn the beading technique to shape and form your one-of-a-kind tree, and learn to form copper leaves full of interesting 

textures. Students will complete their forest with a copper twist wire and twine rim.

Instructor will supply: prepared gourd and all supplies needed to complete your copper forest. Instructor will have a drill and drill bits and some hair dryers for shared class use.

Student must bring: awl and apron or smock. Bring a hair dryer, if you wish.

 SATURDAY MORNING CLASSES, SEPTEMBER 16, 2017

SAM1—WEAVING A GOURD VASE

Teacher: Carol Maddox, Bossier City, LA

Students will learn simple weave, twining, triple twine, hills and valleys, and finish with a simple border. Finally, student will finish with a philodendron sheath and embellishments.

Instructor will supply: cleaned and prepared gourd and all materials needed to complete project.

Student must bring: bucket for soaking reeds, old towel, spray bottle, scissors, needle-nose pliers, apron or smock, and hair dryer.

SAM2—EMBOSSED BOWL

Teacher: Elizabeth West, Cullman, AL

Students will woodburn a pattern on a gourd bowl, based on a Rail Fence quilt design. Then students will use crackle medium, mica powders, and two types of embossing powder to add texture and “bling.”

Instructor will supply: prepared gourd, mica powder, embossing powders, crackle medium, paint, and other miscellaneous supplies. Instructor will have one heat tool to share.

Student must bring: apron or smock, woodburner with knife tip, heat embossing tool (if you have one), 1/2” flat brush, 3/4” flat brush, hair dryer, and level-line marking tool (if you have access to one)

SAM3—ETCHED BIRDHOUSE

Learn the basics of gourd cleaning and preparation. Learn how to draw your design, then etch it onto your gourd using a rotary tool and a small steel ball carving burr.

Instructor will supply: cleaned gourd ready to paint, paint, brushes and clear coat.

Student must bring: Rotary tool (Dremel) or carving tool, small steel ball burr (no larger than 1/8” diameter, and can be smaller - possibly a Dremel 106 or 107. Do not bring a diamond burr; it won’t cut through the hard shell.), hair dryer or heat gun, mask, and apron or smock.

SPM1—REJOICING CHIPPENDALE ANGEL

In this Chippendale style acrylic painting project, student will learn side-loading, floating, double-loading a paint brush, combined with some line work.  Student will also learn to do a basic face to create this lovely angel.

Instructor will supply: instructions, gourd, paint, medium, and brushes.

Student must bring: apron or smock or wear old clothes.

SPM2—ROUND & ROUND LUMINARY

Create a stunning light show by combining drilled holes with electrical illumination! Students will sketch circular patterns onto prepared cannonball gourd and drill holes following the sketched designs. The circles may be filled as desired by student—concentric circles, pie-shaped wedges, stars, etc. Weather permitting, luminary will be sprayed with sealer.

Instructor will supply: cleaned and prepared cannonball gourd, light base with cord and bulb, design templates, pencils, erasers, instructional handout, and other supplies needed to complete this project.

Student must bring: drill and drill bits, ranging from 1/16” to 3/16”. Brad-point bits are less likely to skip. If using a cordless drill, a spare battery may be required. Apron or smock and dust mask, if you wish.

SPM3—BLACK IRIDESCENT TREASURE CHEST
